PORT BLAIR, JAN 12:  Persistent reporting by The Phoenix Post about the rampant illegal sand extraction by the mafia at R.K. Pur and V.K. Pur villages of Hutbay, in Little Andaman has finally made an impact.  The Forest Department officers have taken due note of the illegal activity. In an operation conducted by the officials on 6th February, 25 sand filled gunny bags were seized.  However, the members of the sand mafia managed to escape.

     According to official sources, the DFO and  other officials are on alert in Hutbay and the culprits will be nabbed soon.  A Ranger is also  being dispatched to the area from Port Blair.

   As reported earlier, a sand mafia is actively engaged in the illegal sand extraction from the beaches in Hutbay. Some politicians and officials are alleged to be hand in glove with these elements.
