PORT BLAIR, FEB 8: It was a pathetic sight watching a woman who had undergone a cesarean delivery,  struggling to climb the stairs at GB Pant Hospital to reach her baby put on ventilator  in another ward on Wednesday.  Except her relatives, no medical staff was seen assisting the her to climb the stairs on the way to the ward where she was to breast feed her new born baby.

When contacted,  Dr. S P Burma, DHS,  (MS) said, “There is an elevator available near ICU which leads towards OPD particularly for this purpose. It is beneficial for older people and physically disabled patients or their family members.  The Ward Boys or Staff Nurses are there to assist  them.  In addition,  there is also a ramp and the wheel chairs are available too for the purpose of carrying the patients who cannot walk.  Shortage of wheel chairs, if any, is immediately  taken care of by RKS Funds,” said Dr. Burma.

In the meantime,  Dr. Burma cross-checked with Dr. Bairagi if the elevator was in good running condition and informed this Reporter.
